Narcos is one of Netflix’s greatest success stories, and the original series attracted high viewing figures. That series only spanned three seasons, which served to tell the story that showrunners Chris Brancato, Carlo Bernard, and Doug Miro had laid out in their initial plans. Thanks to its unprecedented success, Netflix opted to make a spinoff, Narcos: Mexico, which was also well received.

The trailblazing streaming platform has a lucrative franchise on its hands with Narcos, so it would be reasonable to assume that it will continue to churn out new content. Rumors suggest a new offering could be in the works, with a female lead at the helm.

How Did Narcos Become Such a Sprawling Franchise?

Back when Narcos first aired on Netflix in 2015, the modern franchise model in entertainment barely existed. Since then, though, a common feature of the most successful television series of all time has been to branch out into various related products to get the attention of as many people as possible. Game of Thrones and Narcos were early leaders with this, and now other series are following suit.

Along with three seasons of the hit crime drama, there were various games inspired by Narcos. One of the most notable ones was Narcos: Rise of the Cartels, a turn-based strategy game released by Curve Games. There was Narcos: Cartel Wars & Strategy too, a popular MMO game. Narcos is also one of the most popular slots you’ll find in a UK online casino list. Indeed, it was so successful that it also led to a Narcos Mexico slot game. These titles stand out in saturated slot lists because they use imagery from the series and people recognize them instantly.

As the Narcos franchise expanded far and wide, it was able to garner attention from people in different areas of the entertainment industry. This drew more people in for Narcos: Mexico and will most likely boost any future spinoffs.

What Will the Next Narcos Spinoff be About?

Just like its predecessor, Narcos: Mexico ran for three seasons. It ended in 2021, and viewers have been left wondering where the franchise will go from here. There are plenty of rumors flying around, with talk of a new project already in development. Reports suggest that it will be called Narcos: Emerald, and it will be about Griselda Blanco, otherwise known as the Black Widow.

Netflix has been trying to strike a deal with Sofia Vergara to star in the series as Blanco, with the Colombian and American actress likely to allure a lot of viewers to a new spinoff. She’s one of the most famous faces on television in the USA and was the highest-paid actress in the country between 2013 and 2020. Fans can bet that a new series will use many of the same tropes that made Narcos and Narcos: Mexico so well-loved.

It’s wise to expect a new Narcos release soon, as Netflix will not want to drop one of its most successful franchises. If rumors are to be believed, the show will return to Medellín – at least to begin with. This time, though, it will be a female drug lord as the focus.
